Situated Sounds is a series of curated performances throughout the 2020-2021 of sound art through an online platform that will present commissioned new work from a combination of established and emerging artists, both local and international, from various disciplines as they respond to themes in relation to sound.
Situated Sounds aims to explore sound from an “embodied” perspective in the time of social distancing. The series contemplates the various limitations, possibilities and opportunities that may arise at a time where aspects of our experience are radically altered, specifically in terms of geographical mobility and virtual interaction. How are sounds reimagined when situated at a time when there is much emphasis in maintaining distance within physical spaces and intimacy in virtual spaces?
We will be inviting artists to respond to the site and time specificity of sounds based on three key themes: sound as space, science of sound and sound as contact.
Situated Sounds I – Sound as Space

Anne-F Jacques is a sound artist based in Montreal, Canada. She is interested in amplification, oblique interactions between materials and construction of various contraptions and idiosyncratic systems. Her particular focus is on low technology, trivial objects and unpolished sounds. She keeps busy these days by doing weekly battery-powered performances in vacant lots in the southwest of Montréal.
Lebanese musician, producer, and sound engineer Fadi Tabbal’s work consists of sound pieces ranging from stripped acoustics to ambient and electronic-inspired treatments. He has previously released 4 solo albums, with his 5th Subject to Potential Errors and Distortions due for release on October 23rd via Beacon Sound and Ruptured. In addition to handling engineering and production tasks at Tunefork Studios which he founded in 2006, Tabbal is a member of several Lebanese bands. A specialist in sound design and conception, he’s worked on a variety of projects including sound and music installations for museums, theatre, and film.
David Ballantine is an emerging Canadian artist whose practice explores the sensing body in space through mediating instruments. Since graduating from OCADUs sculpture and installation program in 2015, David has continued his practice, living and responding to the changing natural environment in rural Seguin, Ontario. As both a composer and inventor, he produces instruments that facilitate new and exciting relationships between the body and its place. These sculptures are intended to somehow capture, recreate or exploit natural phenomena within a living environment, architecture and body site. While exploring ephemeral materials like water and moving air, David Ballantine reaches to understand and bring forth a deeper connection to nature, one that is in constant flux, always seeking balance.
