Joseph Petric’s work is a life-long passion of commissioning, concertizing, recording, teaching, and exploring the accordion’s history of the unknown and deserving. His rich accordion vocabularies have engaged international audiences, media, and masterclasses and his artistic equities of 327 commissions, 33 CD titles and masterclasses continue to open and lead new conversations. Inspired by his study of the humanities, Joseph’s instinctive respect for contexts and palimpsest lead a playful dance of ironies around the canon’s conventional boundaries. A historian and published author (Augemus Press. 2017) Joseph’s monograph The Concert Accordion –Contemporary Perspectives documented a design culture of 14 unknown continental concert accordion patents 1890-1914, nine more in the USA 1905 – 1931 and the interpretive art of dozens of unknown accordionists 1890-1960. Publications pending include The Idea of Accordion and The Accordion Handbook.
“As an artist focused on the challenges of our contemporary art, I am very excited by the opportunities of a vibrant and lasting accordion equity generated by my collaborations with powerful voices from Canada’s communities of emerging composers. In so doing, I look forward to creating new access points and opportunity for fresh compositional voices in support of future generations of accordionists.”
Today’s concert is an acknowledgement of Joseph’s early association with ARRAYMusic’s 1980-81 season where he made his Canadian debut, an event that launched his international career with solo appearances at the Kennedy Centre, Tel Aviv Opera, Tokyo Spring Festival, IRCAM, Tanglewood Festival, Wigmore Hall, and Halle Manchester.
